Chapter 4: Re-written

Sunlight creeps through the tear. As the gentile glow fills the box, so does a bitter wind, swirling through the small space, chilling the spine of the girl who slept there. Goose bumps rose on the body of the girl, who was no more than 16, and made her raise her head, slowly opening her heavy eyes.

Her vision was limited my long strands of hair covering her face, stinging her eyes. Not only that, but the blinding shine from the old sun above strained her pupils, till they adjusted and familiar surroundings appeared.

Crackles of electricity were heard outside, but no burning flesh unlike usual.

‘Good’ Stella thought ‘I don’t want another live to be taken’

She crawled out of the box, clicking her fingers to deactivate the electric shield she formed around her ‘home’.

As she slowly stood up, yawning heavily, de-creasing her skinny jeans, her kind, blue eyes stare out across the council site she lived on, many because no police come near her, so now one to chuck her off the streets.

After re-adjusting her pink top and pulling her denim hat onto her head, she picked up her bag and left, heading towards the ARC.

She was never a violent person, but the thought of warm food every night, that didn’t have half a cigarette butt in it was enough to tempt her into an army life.

She stopped for a brief moment, remembering the night that the Ling attacked the slums, the night she lost Longa. A tear rolled carefully down her cheek. ‘No’ she thought to herself ‘He’s still alive, he has to be’.

Then she quickly glanced around, hoping that Longa would appear, struggling to carry his bag, hoping Stella would help him...she had to admit, he was pathetic at talking to girls, but he was cute.

She smiled at the thought of him, but quickly realised he wasn’t going to come, and she wasn’t going to be able to admit her feelings to him.

More tears followed the first, landing on the cracked ground, echoing out into the scenery.

She knew she had to move on, she knew she had to re-start her life...but she knew she could never do that.

After swallowing hard, Stella continued walking, repeating the phrase ‘Everything will work out, Kirby will provide’ in her head while rubbing her thumb across the silver medallion, embossed with Kirby, well, an interpretation of Kirby, in bronze.

After realising the danger of it being stolen, she pulled it off, slipping it into her bag.

An hour and a bit passed. She walked her usual, head down, trying to avoid any attention for the many thugs she past. She knew where she was going at least. Then an echo of voices reached her ear, though, one was more of a scream.

50 meters away, two boys were in conversation, except one called out in agony.

Stella’s natural instinct took over as she ran towards him and asked “Are you ok?”

Keith looked up at her “I’m fine, I’m fine” He lied as he covered his wound. Quickly, he used his power to pull a knife out of a tree and sent it flying at a
person, who was supposedly his attacker.

Stella smiled and tried to lean against the tree, but missed it and falling into a muddy puddle. She groaned as she sat up, hand on her forehead, waiting for the pain to kick in.

The second boy laughed slightly, he was white with a gentile face, but sharp black hair. He held out a hand to help her up “Hi, I’m Ali”

Stella looked at him and pushed took his hand tightly, pulling herself up “I’m fine, no need to panic folks”. She then smiled “Nice to meet you Ali”

Ali shrugged modestly “Its fine...what’s your name?”

“Stella” She said kindly, trying to pull her hand away.

Ali noticed he was still holding onto her hand and blushed slightly before pulling it away “Yeah, sorry about that” He said, scratching the back of his head.

Stella raised an eyebrow at him, before looking at the spot Keith was at. He had vanished ‘Odd’ She thought.

Ali quickly tried to grab her attention back “Nice to meet you Stella”

“Nice to meet you too Ali” She regretted that she would be remembered by him as the girl who fell in the mud puddle...as she knew, first impressions last...

She snapped back into the real world and sighed ‘I got to stop daydreaming’.

Her eyes quickly gazed upon the building behind her. It stood out as it was the only undamaged building in the area, maybe even Site 3:5.

It was white and clean, many artistic features added to make it look impressive, more as a show to the Ling to see we still have the resources to build things like this, rather than trying to make the street look nice.

A huge white arch stretched over top, connecting to a set of blocks that seamlessly connect with the main, circular building below.

There were many windows, not a single one smashed, which was uncommon at this day and age. It look beautiful but made passers-by slightly nervous when they passed it as a sense of inferiority washed over them as the admired the level for workmanship that was poured into making it.

Stella knew what the building was, it was the one thing that would save her from the streets “The Ark...” She whispered, smiling.
